The Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus) is now considered less abundant than either the James or the Chilean. At Surire, studies have shown that this flamingo depends on diatoms for most of its diet. Historically the body fat of the Andean flamingo, (which is bright orange) was rubbed on sore joints to treat rheumatism.
